Q Is every ugly toenail a fungal nail?
The answer is no. The majority of patients that come into the office do have a fungal toenail(s), or onychomycosis; however there are other causes of ugly toenails. Psoriasis can cause the nails to be thickened and discolored. Certain vitamin deficiencies can cause funny looking toenails. Hypothyroid disease and certain chemotherapy medications can as well. Trauma can result in bleeding under the nail and a discolored toenail. Trauma can also cause the nail to be thicker and grow with ridges or lines going across the nail.
