The simple answer is no. There are many procedures that will enable you, while wearing a special post op shoe, to bear weight on your foot after surgery. Some people feel better using a cane to help support them while many others feel this is not necessary.
Some bunion surgeries do require you to not put any weight on your foot for a period of time. This type of surgery is determined from the examination of your foot, the size of the bunion deformity and the x-ray findings. This is all discussed prior to surgery so you are able to prepare for the post operative course.
If you are suffering from a painful bunion, also know as Hallux Abducto Valgus, see Dr. Harvey R. Danciger for an evaluation, diagnosis and discussion of your surgical and non-surgical treatment options. He is located in Palm Desert, CA. Call (760) 568-0108
