Will cutting a V in my toenail eliminate my ingrown toenail?

The quick answer is no!  Cutting a V in the toenail will not change the shape of the nail or remove the ingrown portion of the toenail.  The toenail grows from the area behind the cuticle, or eponychium, in the area called the matrix.  This is where the cells are that cause the toenail to grow.  Any change in the size, shape or width of the toenail has to be done in the area of the matrix.  Think about a rectangular wood board and you cut a V out of the end of the board.  Can you bend the board inwards reducing the width after this?  Of course not so you can not cure an ingrown toenail by cutting a V in the nail.
