What is an ingrown toenail? What can I do to to relieve the foot pain? What if it's infected?
Ingrown toenails are a painful deformity where the side of the nail grows into the surrounding skin of the toe. The skin becomes red, swollen and extremely painful. When there's pus in the area, the nail has caused an infection. If there's no infection present, simply trimming the part of the nail digging into the skin may be all that's needed.
However, when infection is present it's best to see a podiatrist becuase the side of the nail may need to be removed to prevent further infection and pain. A podiatrist may also permanently remove that portion of the nail if the problem is recurring.
