Will Surgical Screws Set off Alarms in the Airport?

"Hello again, this is Dr. Danciger from the Coachella Valley in Palm Desert, CA. I wanted to just talk a little bit about what patients have been asking a lot lately, when we’re discussing surgery, and what needs to be done, and the various fixation techniques.

Many of them are concerned that the plates, screws, pins, wires that we’re using during surgery that will remain in the foot will set off any kind of an alarm going through airport security.

As of this date, no one has had that situation happen where they’re going through the airport security, and the alarm has been set off. If, by chance, that does occur, then they will probably pull you aside, use the hand wand over the suspected area of the foot, and you could also get a note from your doctor stating the various implants that were used and this should be able to resolve any issue, if by any chance that ever set the alarm off.

But, as I said, as of this date, nothing has ever happened. If you have further questions call your doctor, call us; you can always get a note from your doctor prior to traveling. Thank you!"
